Chapter Discussion 1

Q Learning Objective: This assignment aligns with Chapter Learning Objectives: 4 (Explain why it is useful to study interpersonal communication) and 5 (Understand what is meant by communication competence and assess your own competence). Instructions Complete the Exercise in Chapter 1 entitled: Skill Building Exercise. Then, draft your answers to these questions in a separate document, save a copy for your own backup, then paste your work here and submit: 1. On which of the items of the Skill Building Exercise did you give yourself a "No"? Which "No" item would you say is your biggest problem/issue/weakness? Give a real-life example. 2. Now, in the Chapter Activities at the end of the chapter, complete the Skill Practice: Asking for Feedback on Your Communication. Compare the results of your Skill Building Exercise to the feedback you received from someone else in the Skill Practice. On what items did your own perception match your feedback, and on what items was your own perception different from your feedback? 3. What is one thing you've learned about your own communication after reading Chapter 1? Why do you think it’s important to study interpersonal communication, based on what you learned in this exercise? After you post your answers, respond to two classmates by clicking “reply” and offering insightful commentary or questions, following the guidelines for responding (see rubric below). Please try to only respond to posts that do not have any responses. Grading Rubric This assignment is worth 25 points. Your Post (worth 15 points) 13-15 points = Work is exemplary. I have answered "yes" to all questions. I have attended leadership programs that helped me become a better listener and be able to ask important questions, watch body language and receive feedback from my coworkers. What I find hard to do when working remotely is to look in the camera when having meetings, so I need to improve on that. While working remotely, steady open communication is needed to get the job done. I always seek out feedback daily from my manager and supervisors to make sure I am not making any mistakes in my work. It helps to know what is expected of me and what I expect from my peers thus avoiding miscommunication in the future. Being open to communicating properly daily is also key to career progression.
